Top Cat Care Items for Your Household

Sunny in his favorite spot

When we first found Sunny, our household was not ready for a cat. There are many things available for our furry family members on the market. However, some of the items are essential when you bring home a new cat. From experience with our boys, we would recommend the following necessary cat supplies:

  • Litter Box. Your cat needs a clean, comfortable litter box. A large litter box will be more comfortable and will give your cat enough room. For a kitten or a senior cat, a litter box with low sides will work best. Place the litter box in a bathroom or other clean, quiet place. If your house has two stories, make sure you have litter boxes on each floor. Clean the sides of a litter box with wet wipes at least once a week or as needed.
  • Cat litter. For our cats, we prefer to use corn or grass litter. The litter traps the smell and is easy to clean. Sometimes cats may nibble a little bit of litter, and litter made of organic materials will be better for your cat’s health. Cat litter may be scented or have no scent. Our cats don’t like strong odors; for this reason, we prefer unscented litter. Additionally, your furry friend may develop an allergy to the perfume chemicals.
  • Cat food. It is imperative to feed your cats with species-appropriate, nutritious food and keep them well hydrated. Our cats eat dry kibble and wet can food as well. We continuously research food options for the cats. Generally, we’re looking for high protein, with no meat by-products and minimum preservatives options. The cats always need to have access to clean water.
  • Cat carrier. Wheatear you travel, go to a vet or experience an emergency, a cat carrier is one of the most important items in your household. In our family, we prefer well-built, sturdy carriers with secure locks on the doors. Sunny hates going to the vet. Sometimes, when he struggles, we use a backpack carrier, because it’s easier to put him in.
  • Cat beds. Cats like to snuggle and sleep comfortably. You may want to place multiple cat beds in your house and give the cats a choice. Even if your cat sleeps in your bed at night, he or she may enjoy a nap in a soft, comfy bed during the day. When you learn your cat’s preferences, you will be able to choose the best design and size of a bed for your kitty.
  • Blankets will help to keep your cat warm and comfortable, especially during a cold season. You may use the blankets for the beds or cover your cat, depending on their choice. Additionally, blankets will provide a soft cushion and comfort the cats with their own scent in a cat carrier when you travel.
  • Emergency kit. A backpack or a plastic storage bin works well as a ready-to-go kit for your animals. For the bag, you may need to gather food and water supplies for a few days for all the animals you have. Bring food bowls, leashes, harnesses, beds, blankets, veterinary medications, and any paperwork you have for your cats, like medical records, immunizations, and identification documents. It is a good idea to have the bag ready and available to grab when needed.
