A life that quietly gave light, shelter, and faithful presence, and the gratitude that remained.
My Dear Friend,
You have become a quiet witness of my days. I first noticed you when I sat on the bench outside, in the silence of midday. I noticed your gorgeous branches, majestic crown, and long, beautiful needles. I was watching your tall, brown stem, rising from the ground toward the blue sky, as if you were reaching for the clouds.
Your gentle presence brough piece to my soul and provided a calm, grounded pace to my day. I felt safe and comfortable being next to you, and all the troubles and challenges of the day disappeared under the royal green lush of your branches.
My friend, your quiet presence taught me to leave the challenges of the day behind, to rest in the present moment, and to notice life’s simplest gifts. Beside you, I felt safe. I felt seen and accepted for who I am. You reminded me that I, too, belong to this beautiful tapestry of life. You brought joy into my days, and before long, I found myself looking forward to our quiet meetings.
The sunbeams used to move slowly through your majestic branches, leaving peace and gratitude in my heart. I could watch the gentle golden light touching my hands and my face for a long time.
The wind moved gently through your green needles, breaking the sunlight into thousands of tiny golden fragments that quietly filled the evening air.
Our quiet friendship seemed to belong to something much larger than time itself. We shared the depths and stillness of gray, rainy winter days. And we saw the freshness and gentleness of spring: first flowers, then we embraced the hot, sunny summer days, full of adventure and anticipation of the unknown.
You stood here long before I arrived, quietly welcoming countless seasons before I ever knew your name. When I raised my face toward your crown, in my mind, I was imagining the lives and journeys or other beings that your branches hosted. I was listening to the voices of the birds and thinking about how you were such a part of this place for many, many blessed years. How many beings trusted your branches and found comfort and shelter in your shade.
You welcomed the morning before any of us came to work. Friendly squirrels built their pathways through your limbs. The wind knew your name.
I wonder how many nests you protected.
I wonder how many birds rested before continuing their journey.
I wonder how many tired squirrels paused in your branches.
I wonder how many summer afternoons you quietly cooled beneath your shade.
One day I arrived, and you were gone.
The first thing I noticed was not the empty space above me, but the fresh scent of pine and the tears rising before I understood what happened.
As I stood there in disbelief, I heard a squirrel calling nearby. I couldn’t find the little one, but I whispered quietly, “I’m grieving too.”
You may no longer stand where you once stood.
Your life continues in every creature you sheltered.
And in the quiet gratitude of those who were changed simply by standing beneath your branches.
Your legacy continues in every person who pauses long enough to remember.
Thank you for every season we shared.
Thank you for every sunrise we greeted together.
Thank you for standing so faithfully.
Thank you for sharing your life with ours.
Whenever the wind gently moves through another tree’s branches, I know I will think of you.
You are now part of the quiet company of beloved beings who continue to live within my heart.
Thank you, my dear friend. You will never be forgotten.
Welcome home.
